Looking for a new twist on a sourdough French toast recipe? Look no further! Just in time for your holiday season, this gingerbread sourdough french toast is the perfect simple, yet festive Christmas breakfast! With just a few ingredients, you can have this breakfast whipped up in under fifteen minutes. This North Pole breakfast will bring your Elf on the Shelf breakfast ideas alive, and the littles will eat it all up(literally)!
What do I need for Gingerbread Sourdough French Toast:
- non stick pan or skillet
- blender or medium sized bowl
- whisk, spatula
- eggs
- heavy cream or coconut milk
- molasses
- cinnamon
- nutmeg
- ginger
- cloves
- vanilla extract
What kind of bread should I use?
For this gingerbread sourdough French toast I used my Beginner Overnight Sourdough Bread recipe. For the best results, I would use any HOMEMADE sourdough bread recipe. If you are running short on time, you can use any store-bought sourdough bread, or a regular bread loaf will do too. It may change the texture and flavor of the french toast slightly. If you soak the bread in the sourdough french toast mixture, and saturate it completely before frying the toast you could still get similar results.
Serving Sourdough French Toast
The topping options are endless for this Gingerbread Sourdough French Toast! Some of our favorite fruits to top this breakfast are fresh raspberries, fresh blueberries, or canned peaches, but really any fruit of your choice will work. If you are a chocolate lover, you can add Nutella or chocolate chips! Powdered sugar is a fun way to add a snowy and sweet effect to your Elf breakfast! I topped our sourdough French toast with a very simple plain greek yogurt, pure maple syrup, and a sprinkle of cinnamon! I served with a side of fried eggs as well. This adds more protein to your breakfast, and keeps you feeling full for longer!
Gingerbread Sourdough French Toast
Ingredients
- 2 Eggs
- 1/4 cup Heavy Cream (coconut milk works too!)
- 2 1/2 tbsp Molasses
- 1/8 tsp Nutmeg(ground)
- 1 tsp Cinnamon(ground)
- 1/2 tsp Ginger(ground)
- pinch Cloves(ground)
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
- Small amount of butter or spray coconut oil for greasing pre-heated pan
- 5-6 slices Sourdough Bread homemade or storebought
Topping Options
- Raspberries
- Blueberries
- Canned Peaches
- Nutella
- Chocolate Chips
- Powdered Sugar
- Plain Greek Yogurt
- Pure Maple Syrup
- Dash of Ground Cinnamon
Instructions
- Place your pan on the stove and pre-heat it on medium-low heat(the lower temp take a little longer, but will help your toast fry evenly).
- Combine all ingredients except for the slices of bread in a blender, (or a medium bowl), and blend until combined(or whisk).
- Once you have a smooth French toast mixture, pour it into your medium bowl. Take a slice of bread and put it directly into the egg mixture. Let it sit for a minute to completely saturate the one side. Then flip the slice of bread over to soak in the gingerbread egg mixture.
- Place a small amount of butter or spray coconut oil on your warm pan. Stir it around to coat the bottom of the pan.
- Take your slice of toast soaking in the mixture and place it on the warm pan. (if the pan is warm enough you should hear a quiet sizzle sound).
- Cook the one side for around 3 minutes, or until the side touching the pan is a dark golden brown color. Then flip the toast to cook the other side for the same amount of time.(*see photo for example)
- Remove cooked French toast from the pan when both sides are dark golden brown.
- Place toast on a plate, and dress it with your favorite toppings!
- Enjoy!
